Response to recent earthquake in SE Asia
Our collaborators' efforts in water and food security and disaster preparedness
Our longtime collaborator Jon Jandai (Pi’ Jo) from Pun Pun was giving a workshop at a self-reliance learning center outside of Bangkok during last week’s earthquake centered in central Burma. [For updates on conditions in Burma, see reporting from The Irrawaddy and the Democratic Voice of Burma.]
In this short video he describes their experience of the earthquake (no damage or injuries at their location), and the work he and others are doing at a self-reliance center near Bangkok to prepare for crises. He highlights projects in water security - water collection and storage in swales, ponds, and in cisterns made from bamboo reinforced concrete, and water treatment using charcoal/biochar and other techniques. He also highlights the team’s efforts in food security.
We’re using our contacts in the region to help get aid into affected areas. More to come…
